Internship experience at indiagold: Working in a high growth startup πŸš€πŸš€


I spent my last three months working as a product management intern at indiagold. I was always fascinated with the idea of working in a high-growth startup because of the kind of learning curve it provides. It was well-timed for me to have the opportunity to get my hands dirty by working in a fast-paced dynamic environment at indiagold, before taking off for my Master’s program.

At the beginning of my internship, I was scared, excited, uncertain, curious, all at the same time, about what was ahead in this short journey of three months. It began with a PM 101 (more like 102 :P) session with Deepak Abbot which kickstarted the roller coaster ride for the coming months.

During my three months of internship, the major project I delivered was the lead management system for gold loan leads. It is crucial to have an in-house lead management system as it prevents the risk of data loss, provides more data security, and increases the visibility of lead flow & processes. We were able to deliver around eight integrations for lead capturing in this time. I have worked more on the consumer side of products in my past roles. Thus, working on an internal tool was new and exciting. The entire project gave me a glimpse of system design and architecture (I have these courses in my Masters program as well and this was a good start :D)

I was part of Upraised’s CAP that helped me in cracking the product management internship at indiagold. The learnings I got from Upraised helped me excel at my internship and deliver quality work. The amount of work you put into the program prepares you for to build great products. Mona, the founder of Upraised, helped me in career planning and deciding the company that would help me to meet my goals. The most important takeaway from this program was to have a systematic approach towards solving product problems.

πŸ’ͺ I felt Empowered

indiagold is shaped and run by its people and my internship experience is proof is of that. The culture provides the freedom to drive things in the way you would want to with the focus on delivering high-quality work and creating value. Also, every opinion counts β€” My creativity and ideas got significant visibility and attention.

😁 It was Thrilling

Every day that I had spent at indiagold was different in its way. Especially, as a product manager, you need to do everything to make your product successful. The tasks varied from writing down a detailed PRD to a script of a product marketing video. It can be overwhelming sometimes, but working on a variety of tasks helps in building confidence. The confidence that you can navigate through any challenge thrown in the way of making your product win.

πŸ’ƒ It was Fun

Indiagold provides a fun yet professional atmosphere. The first thing which amazed me about this place was the perfect balance between making work fun and yet doing it seriously. It was a fun bunch of people to work with.

πŸ’― Bias towards action

The biggest challenge I faced while working on the lead management system was β€œOverthinking”. My manager helped me to come out of this trap of deep thinking and focus on execution. The most important takeaway for me was to focus on building rather than obsessing over perfection. A startup that is growing at a fast pace in a competitive landscape, speed is a moat and you learn as you build. I still remember the day when our engineering team launched a product page in just 24 hours.

😡 Navigating through uncertainty

Uncertainty can be seen everywhere in the startup process: in the people, in processes, in the technology, in the product, and in the market. It is inescapable while working in a dynamic startup. While working in a high-growth startup you realize that in order to grow and build β€” uncertainty is inescapable and it pushes you to come out of your comfort zone.

The answer is both yes and no! A high-growth startup has a lot to offer but it comes at a great expense of both physical and mental investment. Hence, the answer depends on a lot of other factors than just work πŸ™‚
